The Day of the Doctor/Nerdtastic Weekend!

Fish fingers and custard!!!! That could only mean one thing... Doctor Who 50th Anniversary viewing party!! It was a fantastic weekend which I'm going to say started Thursday evening when I went to see Catching Fire.

This was me at work Thursday, way too excited to see the movie. I didn't really have time to get a costume together since I was travelling like crazy this month. Nothing a Mockingjay pin can't fix though! The movie was everything I wanted. JLaw can do no wrong in my eyes. I liked it so much that I'm going to see it again tonight in IMAX. The audience was a little dissapointing, our theater was only half full - so not quite the opening night experience I was hoping for. But guess it didn't really matter in the end because the movie was FANTASTIC.

Saturday I woke up and immediately started baking. I bought some great Doctor Who cookie cutters from WarpZonePrints. I dyed the dough blue and grey since I didn't have time to ice the cookies.

I bought TARDIS, DW, Weeping Angel, Adipose, Cyberman, Dalek, and Doctors 8,9, & 10 cookie cutters. Though I didn't use the Doctors and realized after I finished that I also forgot to use the Dalek cutter. Oh well - They'll get some use for the Christmas Special.

I threw some disco dust on the cookies once they came out of the oven.

I love how they turned out!

I found a recipe online for cookies that look like fish fingers. (Because who really eats fish fingers with custard...) I bought a set of shot glasses at Comic-con this summer that display all 11 doctors and have a disappearing TARDIS on the back. (When the glass is warm the TARDIS turns white). They were perfect vessels for custard!

I bought a groupon a while back for personalized M&Ms. I've always wanted to make them. I chose 4 different phrases - "Allons-y", "Geronimo!", "Doctor Who?", and "Bow ties are cool" and had them printed on TARDIS blue M&Ms. mmmmmmm

I also set out some 3D glasses and bow ties for the event. Got to represent both my Doctors!

I got a silicone Doctor Who ice mold for the 50th Anniversary Reddit exchange so we could drink in style - melting Dalek's and TARDIS's alike. The movie was just... SO GOOD. Everything I could have wanted. The interactions between the 3 doctors was gold. So many great one-liners.

I went and saw it again in the theater last night in 3D. It was so fun. Unlike Catching Fire, the theater was completely sold out and the crowd was awesome.

My favorite was the 6 year old behind us in line dressed as a Cyberman telling everyone they would be deleted. One day I hope to have a child as awesome as this.

I even brought my own special snack for the movie :) It was great to watch it with so many fellow Whovians who screamed every time David Tennant came on screen, gasped, cheered, clapped, and yelled in all the right places, and nearly lost their minds towards the end of the movie. (if you saw it, you probably know what part I'm talking about.)

Hope everyone else had as great of a viewing experience as I did!!

Comic-con Cosplay - The Others.

The San Diego Comic-Con this summer was per usual... AMAZING. It's fun to see how things were different from last year. We did not get nearly as much swag. (Last year I think we walked away with 13 t-shirts each - this year we got 3). But we still had an amazing time - even my sister who we basically dragged there had fun!

As you may know, Cosplay is a HUGE part of Comic-con. Here are some of the crafty/awesome costumes I saw.

Please somebody tell me where to buy this skirt and/or fabric. I NEED.

Doctor Who decoupage FTW.

Hobbits! These women were so cute - pulled the look off wonderfully! Need to figure out how to do the feet for the midnight showing.

This is definitely the coolest costume we saw this year - it was a fully functioning (in that things moved and lit up automatically, not in that it had real fire power) Iron Man suit! I have no idea how long this would take to make or how much money - but my bet is on a lot for both.

Lolz. Only at cons do you just see a Stormtrooper just casually walking down the street.

Because I am obsessed with Doctor Who.

Avengers FAMILY!? I need children immediately.

Deadmau5.

This Katniss was all over the con. I saw her multiple times, and then I've seen her on tons of blogs since. I think it helped that she wore the costume multiple days, but I guess when you've got a good one you need to show it off!

I'm Up For Hire!

I had my VERY FIRST commission last week! My boss's daughter is obsessed with the Hunger Games (kid after my own heart!) so she asked if I'd make her a cake just like I did at my Hunger Games Party. I used a Wilton roll and cut mat to roll out the fondant this time. It didn't really work too well - the fondant stuck to the mat so when I finally pried it off it was a bit wrinkly. Next time - powdered sugar! I also didn't cover the edges too well - luckily thats nothing that can't be fixed with a crap ton of fondant leaves! I just put a lot more around the edge to cover up all the gaffes.

Here is the cake I made for the birthday with my first cake below it for comparison.

The bird is positioned a little differently. I think I made him too big this time around - had to squeeze the letters around him. But luckily my boss didn't notice and she said her daughter loved it. Sorry there's no picture of the jungle I put around the edge. Next time.

Friday Musings #12

So my many weeks of Hunger Games themed blogging comes to an end... or does it?? But really - I think I've exhausted that area of craftiness for a while. Next up - Kim's bridal shower tomorrow and then Easter next week. I need to look through the Martha Stewart magazine for some ideas. I want to do fun egg dying this year. There were so many cute Easter crafts I saw on pinterest too - a peep wreath!! But I think its a little late for that. I'll have to push it to the "to-craft" list for next year! I really need to get knitting too.....

Let Those Hungry Kids Eat Cake!

Here it is! The COOLEST cake I've ever made!! Get ready for A LOT of pictures. I took them at almost every step of the way - so here we go:

I baked a yellow cake and frosted it with store bought
frosting - not enough time to make my own! Also, still delicious.

I used black Fondarific butter cream fondant for my base - it is actually delicious. I had never liked fondant before, but I can definitely eat this stuff. Dying anything black is a feat in itself so I'm happy I could by pre-dyed fondant.

Time to roll it out! It was a bit of a pain because I have the WORST
kitchen table known to man for baking. There are 5 leaves
in it so you get lines in EVERYTHING.

Transferred the fondant to the cake.

Smoothed it out and cut off the excess. Time for decorating!!

I got my fondant tools all ready. I bought
Wilton's white fondant to mold into the mocking jay.

Using the lid to the fondant and the slightly smaller lid to
the frosting can, I cut out this circle and then painted it gold.

Next I shaped the head and used one of my decorating tools to
texture the head to make it look like it has feathers.

I started assembling the mockingjay on the cake. I made the body
and the tail out of one piece of fondant and cut lines into the tail.

I used a leaf cookie cutter for the feathers because that was all I had.

I filled in the wings with my feather/leaves and then made an arrow to lay across the bottom. I pulled the mockingjay's beak down a bit so it looks like its biting the arrow.

Then I gave it the Midas touch.

Woot!

Cutting out letters!

I had to work a little with the kerningI put way too much space
between "be" and "ever" at first and had to move it all around.

Then I used the leaf cutter to *gasp* actually cut out leaves for the border.

I rolled purple balls, rolled them in disco dust
then indented them to look like berries.
Nightlock berries.

And there you have it! My finished Hunger Games Mockingjay cake!!

I have to give credit to Pikko's step by step instructions on how she made her Hunger Games cake. I followed it to make the wings and then eyeballed the rest. Ahhh - November 22, 2013 can't get here soon enough!!
